The college application process can seem like a monster: essays, supplemental essays, college lists, college visits, reaches, targets, safeties. At the outset, the process is daunting, mysterious and incredibly stressful. Once engaged it can prove to be that and more, plus a heck of a lot of hard work.
As academic and test prep tutors, we have seen countless students and families run this gauntlet, and we have gained invaluable insight and knowledge along the way. Some of the families we’ve assisted have enjoyed the services of attentive high school college offices, and some have not. Some families have been proactive and well-prepared for the admissions task, and some have not. In virtually all cases, we find that parents are surprised by how different the process is from their own college searches and applications; it was a very different world a few decades ago, and college admissions were far less competitive.
Focus College Advisory offers guidance and support to families as they tackle college applications. We believe that this process, if taken head-on in the proper spirit, can and should be a positive and affirming one. We know that there are many great schools, and many great outcomes. Our goal will always be to foster honest and effective communication between parents and students, helping each family to take an open, well-informed approach to the search.
Choosing a college is a wonderful opportunity, and the college search should be a thoughtful endeavor, a chance for discovery. It can even be fun. Really.
